Although not really a nut, the seed or the fruit of coconut is actually a drupe. The coconut fruit is truly versatile since it has a wide range of uses. The fruit’s water can be a refreshing and healthy drink, and at the same time you can extract oil and (coconut) milk from its meat. The coconut oil and milk are vital ingredients in Asian cuisines especially the Philippines and India.
But there are some amazing facts about the coconuts that are worthy of getting noticed:
The coconut can swim – Equipped with a waterproof shell and an inner layer of husk that makes the coconut floats, this tough seed can manage its way across miles and miles of sea travel then take root in a safe place it lands.
The coconut can be made into wines – The coconut flower sap is used and fermented for few days to produce coconut wine which is called “tuba,” in the Philippines. If the fermentation process takes more days and it undergoes distillation process it will transform into a more potent yet good tasting wine which is the “lambanog” or coconut vodka.
The coconut is self-sufficient – the coconut seed can get all of its nutrients inside its shell until it emerges and grow into a tree.
The coconut boast of the healthiest natural sugar in the world – The coconut sap can be heated until it transform into coconut sugar, which is a popular alternative to cane sugar. The coconut sugar is low in glycemic index and safe to use for people with diabetics.
